I have learned in my life and ministry journey how important our connections are to shaping us. I am the middle child of 6 kids. There is a quote talking about how we parent as the number of kids in the family grow. The quote goes something like this, “with the first kid you are cautious because you are not sure about this parenting thing, so you focus on trying NOT to make mistakes. They go on to say, “by the time you have the third child you let them juggle steak knives”.
My mom and stepdad had three more, so I really was lost in the shuffle. Now, this isn’t one of those I had a bad mother or stepdad, because I didn’t. I hate using the word stepdad because Michael John Hickey was the only father I knew. Although, my mother did have her hands full with 6 kids and the fact that my dad was a Merchant Marine, gone sometimes months at a time, made life somewhat difficult for our family and especially for our mother.
As I look back, I thank God for Dewberry Lane in Pasadena, Texas. We moved there from 137 Fannin Street in Corpus Christi, Texas in August of 1962. I left my best friend Mary Weigelt and had to start all over. It is on Dewberry that I made connections that not only would last a lifetime but some of these connections that I made would shape the person I would become. I will share later those special connections and how they shaped me, but I would like to hear about the people who shaped your life, those connections that changed you, those people who had a profound effect of your life. ……. Until next time Grace and Peace
